About the Picture in the Header ...

The picture was taken in August 2002 while I was deployed with my National Guard unit to southern Germany. Yes, that's me. I'm about three-quarters of the way up the Wendelstein Mountain ... For someone who's afraid of heights I felt on-top-of-the-world!

In case you're wondering, Wendelstein Mountain is an 1845 meters (that's 6053 feet!) high mountain in the Bavarian Alpes; about 75 Km (46.6 miles) south-east of Munich.

There are three ways to get to the top of the Wendelstein ...

  1. An 8 minute cable car ride.
  2. A 25 minute ride on cog train. It's the oldest rack-railroad in the German Alps. Or ...
  3. Hike up.

As you have probably already guessed, we hiked up. It was some of the most beautiful scenery that I've ever seen in my life! Grazing cows, unusual flowers, mountain goats ... right out of the movie Heidi!

We reached the top of the Wendelstein after almost two hours of climbing. To celebrate, my buddies and I did a shot of Jägermeister ;-). Then we ate lunch, took some pictures, and hiked back down the mountain. It was a wonderful experience!

I hope to take my family there some day ... sans Jägermeister!
